Amelia National’s Golf Course Renovation Is Underway

April 24, 2025Crews are now hard at work on Amelia National Golf & Country Club’s renovation of its storied Tom Fazio-designed golf course. It’s an exciting next step for the crown jewel amenity at Fernandina Beach’s best address. The multi-million-dollar renovation project began in mid-March, after the golf course closed following another active winter season. And although it won’t be an instantaneous process, the renovation — overseen by the course’s original architectural firm, FAZIO Designs — also won’t be a complete overhaul. “I would say this is more of a re-grassing and a refreshing of the current golf course and the current golf conditions,” said FAZIO Designs’ Gavin Fazio during a November presentation. Amelia National is one of ICI Homes’ signature properties in northeast Florida, nestled 10 minutes west of downtown Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island’s glorious Atlantic beaches. The Fazio-designed golf course is the centerpiece here, winding throughout this gated community. It provides beautiful natural backdrops to residents’ homes and Amelia National’s French Provincial clubhouse, which also serves as the amenity hub. If you’re a golfing enthusiast seeking a new custom luxury home in northeast Florida, Amelia National should be on your radar. Because soon, you’ll have a better-than-ever course to play! Here’s more information. Diving into details Amelia National and its golf course opened in 2006. After two decades of enthusiastic use, some tweaking and updating is necessary. A critical factor is the course’s original iteration. Tom Fazio designed Amelia National using the existing coastal-forested terrain, placing holes, greens and fairways into an already lovely place. The current renovation builds off those good bones rather than uprooting everything from scratch. It prioritizes these five goals, as presented by Gavin Fazio and project manager Ron Smith in November: Improve course conditions with new turf and decrease shade issues. Renovate course to modern standards for more efficient maintenance. At some holes, re-position bunkers and add tees for improved strategy and playability. Improve current practice facilities by re-positioning cart tracks and shifting vegetation, etc., to make a great entrance to the course even better. Restore greens back to original sizes to maximize hole locations. A few more deets Amelia National’s course will be outfitted with one of the golfing industry’s cutting-edge turf choices. FAZIO Design crews will use a technology called Bunker Solution to update bunkers and minimize washout problems. Per Gavin Fazio and Smith, this ensures Amelia National’s bunkers will contain less square footage and provide better visibility. Trees will be trimmed and/or removed in select areas to improve vistas and turf growth, and drainage issues will be tackled and solved. Half of the project’s multi-million-dollar budget will fund a new golf maintenance facility. As with any natural site work and terrain processes, a golf course renovation takes time. Winter Fun Alert: Amelia Island Book and Music Festivals

February 12, 2025One significant perk of living at Amelia National Golf & Country is the year-round local events calendar. Amelia National residents are mere minutes west of their hometown of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island — one of Florida’s major resort destinations — and its vibrant arts, culture and dining scenes. Special events, festivals and social opportunities run nearly nonstop during northeast Florida’s mild winter season and vibrant early spring. Two premier festivals this time of year involve literary and musical pursuits — the Amelia Island Book Festival and the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Both are highly popular, attract world-renowned literary and musical talent, and are well worth exploring. Here’s a quick primer on both festivals, and how Amelia National residents can check them out. Amelia Island Book Festival Founded in 2001, the Amelia Island Book Festival focuses on the fun of reading and writing. It places an emphasis on promoting lifelong literacy for the young and young at heart throughout northeast Florida. Its signature event happens each February and features a star-studded lineup of authors who visit area schools, participate in an expansive public event featuring discussions, Q&As and book signings. These literary icons also attend a black-tie gala. International best-seller John Grisham, who has vacationed on Amelia Island, is a past participant in the Amelia Island Book Festival. In fact, Fernandina Beach’s downtown bookstore, The Book Loft, served as inspiration for the fictional bookstore in his Camino Island novel. Now in its 24th year, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival begins in mid-December and ends in mid-June. Each month features concerts at popular locations in Fernandina Beach and across Amelia Island — all only minutes from Amelia National. Unfamiliar with chamber music? It’s often performed in small venues, either by solo musicians or a group, and frequently includes stringed instruments and pianos. January 8, 2025Amelia National Golf & Country Club’s renowned Tom Fazio-designed golf course is headed for some exciting new renovations soon, which means it must close, temporarily, so that the Fazio Designs team can begin doing their thing. If you’re a resident, or potentially one interested in buying or building a new custom Florida home at Amelia National, never fear! The course and its surrounding support facilities will return in a major, gleaming way. But to do so, the course and its driving range must begin by closing on Monday, March 17. How to handle the down time while the course and its facilities undergo their transformation? Why not mini-golf? Mini-golf courses are as much a part of Florida’ recreational landscape as the real thing, and many of us likely have fun memories of striking a ball through a plastic pirate’s legs at some point in our leisure history! So, while we wait for the renaissance of Amelia National’s golfing centerpiece, we’ll explore where to golf the “mini” way instead. A duffer’s paradise Golf has a long tradition in Florida, where beautiful courses abound. The PGA Tour headquarters is in Ponte Vedra Beach, south of Jacksonville, and many local, state and regional tournaments take place here — Amelia National often has hosted some of these competitions. Keep going east and you’ll arrive at an Amelia Island beach. But tarry here for 18 holes that traverse waterfalls, bridges and tunnels, all to an outdoor musical soundtrack.
